Best Waterfall Photography Tips
Waterfall shoots are humid, bright, and full of spray. These tips keep your gear dry and your exposures on point.
Control shutter speed
- Start at 1/5 second for silky flow, then bracket faster options in case you want texture.
- Use a 3-stop ND filter when shooting in midday sun so you can keep ISO low.
Protect your optics
- Carry a microfiber towel in a zip bag so spray doesn't soak your cloth.
- A collapsible lens hood doubles as a shield on windy overlooks.
Compose with foreground
- Look for mossy logs, trail rails, or people in bright jackets for scale.
- Switch to vertical orientation for horsetail ribbons—horizontal frames often waste space.
